Two Wheels Are Enough to Cause a Collision Resulting in Two Fatalities
On August 20, 2024, a single vehicle motorcycle accident claimed two lives. Just before 10:00 in the evening, James Leonard Ely III was riding his 2006 Suzuki motorcycle on Kyzer Road in Red Bank. Ely was also transporting a passenger on the back of his motorcycle. As the motorcycle approached Honors Court, Kevin Scott Collins attempted to cross Kyzer Road to get his mail from the mailroom of his apartment complex. As he crossed the road, Ely’s motorcycle struck him. The impact of the collision caused Ely to lose control of the motorcycle and veer off the road, eventually striking a car and a tree. Ely was pronounced dead at the scene. He was 17 years old. Collins, 63, was also pronounced dead at the scene. The passenger on Ely’s motorcycle was transported to the hospital to receive treatment for injuries that were not life-threatening.
As of the most recent news reports, the collision is still under investigation, and the South Carolina Highway Patrol did not reveal any insights to the News 19 website about what might have caused the accident. The news report also did not indicate whether Ely was wearing a helmet at the time of the collision. South Carolina law requires motorcycle occupants under the age of 21 to wear helmets.
