Columbia Man Suffers Devastating Injuries After Car Strikes His Skateboard

Skateboarding2

If a car hits you when you are not in another car, you tend to think of your life as the time before the accident and the time after.  When cars hit pedestrians, motorcyclists, and bicyclists, only the lucky few can walk themselves to the emergency room and then leave the hospital soon after, much the same as they were before, except with a big pile of medical bills and a story to tell.  It is hard to appreciate just how much the human body is not a match for a motor vehicle until the two collide with each other.  Skateboards are among the vehicles where it is often possible to avoid serious injury unless you come into direct contact with a car; helmets and knee pads are usually sufficient to protect you from anything more than minor injuries if you fall off of your skateboard on a sidewalk or at a skatepark.  A young man in Columbia is slowly regaining his health after getting hit by a car while riding his skateboard.  If you suffered serious injuries after getting hit by a car while skateboarding, contact a Columbia car accident lawyer.

Asher’s Long Recovery After Skateboard Accident

Asher Dibernardo, 22, knows the hills and valleys of Columbia inside and out.  His father, Anthony Dibernardo owns the Swig and Swine restaurant, and Asher has grown up here.  On December 2, 2023, he was skateboarding with his friends, and when he skated down a hill, a car struck him; it would not have been easy for him to tell that the car was coming until he was almost at the bottom of the hill.  His friends called 911 when they found him unresponsive, and he was immediately transported to Prisma Regional Hospital Center.

The devastating effects of brain and spinal cord injuries are often not the direct result of the traumatic injury, but rather of the swelling that occurs in the days following the accident.  This is why doctors often give patients steroids after a spinal injury, to prevent swelling in the area from causing paralysis.  In the case of a head injury like the one Asher suffered, the greatest danger was brain swelling.  Therefore, upon his arrival at the hospital, doctors removed part of his skull to allow for the swelling, which usually peaks at five to seven days after the injury when the injured person is in his or her 20s; after the swelling decreased, they performed another surgery to repair his skull.  All of this means that he spent several weeks in a medically induced coma.  Once he woke up, he was able to move some parts of his body immediately.  He still has a long recovery ahead of him.
