Fatal Car Accident In Car Accident Parking Lot

CarAcc10

Insurance companies receive claims every day about collisions that happened in parking lots, but most of these do not cause serious injury.  Navigating your way into and out of a parking space is among the skills you must demonstrate on the road test before you can get a driver’s license, but novice drivers who have successfully executed the maneuver to the satisfaction of the DMV examiner still make mistakes that lead them to graze the parked vehicle next to them as they enter a parking space or back into the fender of an approaching car as they pull out of a space, misjudging the proximity of objects displayed by their rear-facing camera.  Even experienced drivers can get into accidents in parking lots if the spaces are especially tight or the people trying to drive or park there are especially impatient.  Fatal accidents in parking lots, however, are a never event; they can only occur when there is extraordinary negligence.  If you have suffered severe injuries in an accident where a car was traveling at high speed in a parking lot, contact a Columbia car accident lawyer.

Speeding Honda Strikes Two Parked Vehicles at Mitsubishi Dealership

Most of the time, the cars on the lot of the Greer Mitsubishi dealership on East Wade Hampton Boulevard do not move very fast; even if you use the utmost caution, any car you buy will lose a large share of its value the minute you drive it off the parking lot.  Even when people approach the dealership with a resolute decision to buy a car, they enter the lot at a low speed.  What happened one day in November 2024 was uncharacteristic.  The driver of a 2006 Honda lost control of the car as it passed the Mitsubishi dealership.  This caused it to veer off the road and strike two unoccupied vehicles in the dealership lot.

First responders arrived and transported the two occupants of the Honda to Spartanburg Medical Center.  The driver, whose name news sources did not release, suffered non-life-threatening injuries.  The passenger, Max Charles Harris, died of his injuries at the hospital that evening.  He was 39 years old.

As of the most recent reports published about the accident, an investigation into its causes is still pending.  No criminal charges had been filed in connection to the accident, so it is unlikely that the driver was under the influence of drugs or alcohol.  If the driver’s negligence was what caused him or her to lose control of the car, then the passenger’s surviving family members have the right to file a wrongful death claim against the driver, even if there are no criminal charges.  The victim’s family might be able to file a product liability claim if a defect of the Honda was the cause of the accident.
