Fatal Motorcycle Accidents Do Not Always Involve A Car Striking A Motorcycle

One of the worst things that can go wrong when you are riding a motorcycle is for the motorcycle to collide with another moving vehicle. Collisions between a motorcycle and a car are usually bad news for the person on the motorcycle, even if the occupants of the car only sustain minor injuries; motorcycles do not have seatbelts, airbags, or any of the other features that protect car passengers from serious injury in the event of a car accident. Meanwhile, disastrous accidents are still possible even if the motorcycle collides with something other than a moving vehicle. The South Carolina Highway Patrol has reported several fatal motorcycle accidents that happened during the last week of 2021 and the first week of 2022 and which did not involve any motor vehicles besides the motorcycle. South Carolina Motorcycle Accident Fatalities of Early 2022

Since Christmas 2021, at least four fatal motorcycle accidents have taken place in South Carolina. These are four such accidents reported by The State and the WMBF News website:

On December 30, 2021, Buddy Shannon was riding his 2002 Yamaha motorcycle on Francis Marion Drive in Georgetown County. He was thrown from his motorcycle after colliding with a deer. Shannon, 45, was wearing a helmet at the time of the accident, but he later died of his injuries at a hospital.
On January 3, a 2009 Harley-Davidson motorcycle collided with a tree that had fallen in the road near the intersection of Old Hopkins Road and Garners Ferry Road in Richland County. The rider, whose name media sources did not release, was wearing a helmet, but he also died of his injuries after arriving at the hospital.
On January 1, a 2020 Harley-Davidson ran off the road in Cecil County and crashed into a ditch. The rider was ejected from the motorcycle after it flipped over. This rider died at the scene, and news sources did not say whether he was wearing a helmet.
On January 2, a 2015 Harley-Davidson motorcycle ran off the left side of McCrays Mill Road in Sumter County. The bike struck a curb and then crashed into a utility pole. This rider also died at the scene, and news sources also did not say whether he was wearing a helmet at the time of the accident.

Because these accidents happened so recently, no news reports are available about civil or criminal legal cases arising from these accidents. It is possible that preventable road hazards were to blame for some of these accidents. If any of the riders were under the influence of alcohol, dram shop liability laws could apply.
