Rollover Accidents In South Carolina

Rollover6

Just before dawn on July 27, 2024, Yolanda Johnson of Conway was driving a 2002 Chevrolet SUV on Secondary Highway 19 near Loris when her car drove off the road.  The vehicle struck a tree and overturned.  Johnson was pronounced dead at the scene.  She was 45 years old.  As of July 28, the accident is still under investigation, and new reports have not released any details about any information they have found out about the moments leading up to the accident.  Single vehicle collisions can be just as dangerous as the ones where someone else hits your car.  People who get injured in single vehicle accidents have the right to seek damages from responsible parties whose negligence contributed to the accident.  These can include the vehicle manufacturer, if a manufacturing defect caused the accident, the county where the accident happened, if poorly maintained roads were the cause.  You can even file a dram shop liability claim if a bar served you alcohol when the staff should have known that you were too drunk to drive.  If you suffered serious injuries when your car overturned in a single vehicle collision, contact a Columbia car accident lawyer.

Why Are Rollover Accidents So Bad?

Rollover accidents, where a car overturns onto its roof, are not very common, but they are dangerous.  They account for only three percent of accidents serious enough to require a police report, but nearly one third of rollover accidents result in fatalities.  Rollover accidents are dangerous because they increase the risk of occupants being ejected from the vehicle, which increases the risk of death.  Even if no one is ejected, the risk of death is still considerable if the vehicle lands on its roof, because the roof of a car is not made to protect people from the impact of a collision the way that the seating area is.

How to Prevent Rollover Accidents

A considerable number of rollover accidents are single vehicle collisions that occur when a driver loses control of the car.  These are some things you can do to prevent rollover crashes:

  • Maintain your tires well and keep them properly inflated. If your car is out of warranty, be sure to replace your tires and associated parts with ones identical to the original ones.
  • Do not overload your car. Excessive weight makes the car harder to control.
  • Avoid excessive speed, especially when turning.
  • Be vigilant on rural roads, especially unfamiliar ones, as these sometimes have sharp curves that are hard to see from a distance.
  • Do not overcorrect, especially at high speeds.

Rollover accidents can happen to any kind of car, not just SUVs.  They can occur when someone else strikes your car at high speed, even if you did everything to avoid a collision.
