Semi Truck Collides With Bus Full Of Student Athletes

Students Sustain Minor Injuries After Truck Crashes Into School Bus

In the summer of 2023, high school football players from around the state attended a summer camp at the University of South Carolina.  After the camp ended, a bus that was transporting participants back to their home school for pickup by parents was involved in an accident.  The bus involved in the collision was a minibus from the Florence School District.  Most of the players were students at Lake City High School, but a few of them were enrolled at J. Paul Truluck Creative Arts and Magnet School.  All of the students were 16 years old, except for one student who was 17.  The Lake City coach was also on the bus with the students.

While the bus was traveling north on U.S. 301 in Orangeburg County, a semi truck that was driving west on Bonner Avenue collided with it.  The bus driver and all of the passengers on the bus were injured seriously enough to require medical attention, but none of their injuries were life-threatening.  Only the coach was injured seriously enough to require admission to the hospital.  The driver of the truck was not injured.

At the time that news reports about the accident were published, the accident was still under investigation, and the police did not say who was at fault or if anyone received charges for the accident.  The injured passengers have the right to sue the party responsible for the collision.  Depending on which driver was at fault for the accident, the responsible party is either the school district or the company that owns the truck.
